BONDING BRACES POST-CARE INSTRUCTIONS

After bonding in braces, good care is very important to ensure the alignment process goes smoothly and to avoid problems such as inflammation or damage to the braces. Here are some after-care instructions that you can follow after bonding in braces:

1. Maintaining Oral Hygiene

  • Brush Your Teeth Regularly: Make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day and thoroughly clean around the brackets and wires. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and fluoride toothpaste.

  • Use Dental Floss: Flossing is essential to clean the spaces between your teeth and braces that cannot be reached with a toothbrush alone. Use dental floss or specialized flossing tools for braces, such as super floss or floss threaders, to clean around the wires and brackets.

  • Mouthwash: Use an alcohol-free antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria and reduce the risk of infection.

2. Foods to Avoid

  • Avoid consuming hard, chewy, or sticky foods that can damage braces or cause harm to the wires or brackets. These include:

  1. Hard candies, such as lollipops or caramel

  2. Hard foods like nuts, popcorn, or hard bread crusts

  3. Sticky foods like chewing gum, chocolate, or foods that can stick to the braces (e.g., chewing gum)

  • Cut large foods into small pieces before chewing to prevent unnecessary pressure on the braces.

3. Overcoming Discomfort

  • Pain: A few days after getting braces or after adjustments, you may experience slight pain or discomfort in your teeth or mouth. This is normal. You can reduce the pain with paracetamol or ibuprofen, but be sure to follow the dosage recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Mouth Sores: Brackets and wires can cause sores or irritation on your cheeks or tongue, especially in the first few days. You can use a special gel or wax for braces provided by your dentist to cover the areas causing discomfort.

4. Monitoring and Maintenance of Braces Wires

  • Protruding or Loose Wires: If the braces wire moves or protrudes, or if a bracket becomes loose, contact your orthodontist immediately to repair or replace the damaged part. Do not attempt to fix it yourself using tools.

  • Regular Adjustments: You will need to attend regular appointments with your orthodontist to check and adjust your braces, usually every 4-6 weeks.

5. Clean Your Mouth After Eating

  • After eating, make sure to clean your mouth with plain water or a water bottle if you can't brush your teeth immediately. This will help reduce food buildup around the braces and prevent tooth damage or plaque formation.

6. Using Additional Appliances (If Provided)

  • Some patients require additional appliances such as headgear, rubber bands, or expanders to assist in aligning the teeth. Be sure to follow the orthodontist's instructions carefully to ensure the appliances are used correctly.

7. Guarding Against Bad Habits

  • Avoid bad habits such as biting nails, chewing pencils, or chewing hard objects that can damage braces or wires.

  • If you smoke, try to reduce or quit, as smoking can slow down the healing process and damage the appearance of your teeth and braces.

8. Emergency Treatment

  • Loose Bracket: If a bracket comes off, keep it in a clean container and bring it to the next appointment for repair. If you feel discomfort, use wax to cover the loose bracket while waiting for treatment.

  • Bent or Dislodged Wire: If the wire is causing irritation to the cheek or gums, you can gently try to push it back using a cotton swab or apply wax to the affected area.

Good care will ensure that your braces treatment goes smoothly and provides the best results. Don't hesitate to ask your orthodontist if you have any questions or concerns during your braces journey.

Good luck with your braces treatment! :)
