Post-operative care instructions after minor oral surgery (MOS)
MANAGEMENT OF BLEEDING
Some bleeding may occur 24-48 hours after the extraction. This is normal.
Bite on gauze (cotton) for 5-10 minutes to stop the bleeding.
Avoid hot food and drinks.
Avoid smoking or exercising.
WARNING: If the bleeding is heavy or doesn’t stop, go to the nearest treatment center immediately.
PAIN MANAGEMENT:
Pain may be felt within 24-48 hours after the surgery.
Make sure to take pain relief medication before the numbness wears off and continue every 6-8 hours as needed.
CAUTION: Don’t wait for the pain to start before taking the medication. Start the pain relief medication BEFORE the local anaesthetic wears off.
PREVENTION OF INFECTION
Make sure to finish the antibiotics prescribed.
Rinse with the mouthwash provided.
Do not leave the stitches in for too long.
The stitches should be removed within 5-10 days after the surgery.
MANAGEMENT OF SWELLING OR DIFFICULTY OPENING MOUTH
Significant swelling may occur 24-48 hours after the surgery.
Take the anti-swelling medication provided.
If swelling is severe, apply ice on the face opposite the tooth removed every few hours.
Difficulty opening the mouth will be experienced for 5-7 days after the surgery. It will subside within a week.
Follow a soft diet for 3-7 days (e.g., soup, porridge, etc.).
Avoid tough meat for a month.
