Post-operative care instructions after minor oral surgery (MOS)

Minor dental surgery is a dental procedure that involves surgical intervention to treat dental, gum, or oral structure issues that cannot be resolved with routine treatments. This procedure is usually performed by a dentist specializing in oral surgery (oral surgeon) or by a general dentist with specialized training.

1. BLEEDING There will be slight bleeding 24-48 hours after extraction. This is normal. Bite on gauze (cotton) for 5-10 minutes to stop the bleeding. Avoid hot food & drinks. Avoid smoking or exercising.

2. PAIN Pain is felt within 24-48 hours after surgery. Make sure to take pain medication before the numbness wears off and continuously every 6-8 hours. INSTRUCTION: Do not wait until the pain starts to take the medication.

3. INFECTION Make sure you complete the prescribed antibiotics. Gargle with the prescribed mouthwash. Do not leave the stitches for too long. The stitches should be removed within 5-10 days after surgery.

4. SWELLING @ DIFFICULTY OPENING MOUTH Significant swelling may occur 24-48 hours after surgery. Take the prescribed medication to reduce swelling. If the swelling is large, apply ice every few hours. Difficulty opening the mouth will be experienced 5-7 days after surgery. It will subside after 1 week. Follow a soft diet for 3-7 days (soup, porridge, etc.). Avoid tough meat for a month.
