11 Tips for Dental Care After Whitening Treatment

WHITENING

Teeth whitening is a process performed to lighten the color of teeth, making them appear whiter and cleaner. This procedure is typically done to improve the appearance of teeth that have become yellow or stained due to various factors, such as:

  1. Aging: As a person ages, tooth enamel becomes thinner, causing the dentin (the darker inner layer of the tooth) to become more visible.

  2. Food and Drinks: Coffee, tea, red wine, and certain foods can cause stains on the teeth.

  3. Tobacco: Smoking or using tobacco products often causes teeth to appear yellowish or stained.

  4. Poor Oral Hygiene: Not brushing or flossing properly can lead to plaque buildup and staining on the teeth.

  5. Medications: Certain medications, such as tetracycline antibiotics, can cause discoloration of teeth if taken during tooth development.

11 Tips for Dental Care After Whitening Treatment

1. LIP BALM (LIP MOISTURIZER) Make sure to apply a lip moisturizer or lip balm after the whitening procedure to prevent prolonged dryness of the lips caused by keeping the mouth open for an extended period during the procedure.

2. GEL (FORULCER) If any whitening agent comes into contact with the lips, gums, or cheeks during treatment and causes an ulcer, apply the gel provided by the clinic to the affected area.

3. SENSITIVE TEETH If you experience sensitive teeth after undergoing a whitening treatment, it is completely normal. Don’t worry! Use the sensitive toothpaste provided by the clinic for 3–7 days, depending on your level of sensitivity.

4. DIET - Avoid eating foods that are too hot or too cold to reduce tooth sensitivity.

5. PAINKILLERS (PANADOL) You may take painkillers such as Panadol if you still feel pain for more than 2 days (however, this rarely happens).

6. TOOTH COLOR CHANGES The most dramatic tooth color changes occur immediately after the whitening process (due to tooth dehydration). If you notice a slight change in tooth color afterward, it is normal.

7. COLORED FOOD & BEVERAGES Avoid and reduce colored foods and beverages such as turmeric, curry, tea, coffee, and others to maintain the whiteness of your teeth.

8. SMOKING Do not smoke for at least 48 hours after the whitening process is performed.

9. QUIT SMOKING It is best to quit smoking as it is the biggest contributor to yellowing of teeth.

10. DRINK MORE WATER Drink more water instead of sugary and colored drinks. It can reduce the risk of your teeth turning yellow quickly.

11. TOUCH-UP TREATMENT A touch-up treatment (follow-up) may be needed after 6-12 months to maintain the whiteness of the teeth achieved. Touch-up trays and gel can be obtained from our clinic
